Rosary Tips

Here is a list of 4 ways to help prevent distraction during the Rosary.

1) Put yourself in the presence of God and imagine that God and his Blessed Mother are watching you.

2) Imagine that your guardian angel is at your right hand, taking your Hail Marys, if they are well said, and using them like roses to make crowns for Jesus and Mary.

3) Remember that at your left hand is the devil, ready to pounce on every Hail Mary that comes his way and to write it down in his book of death, if they are not said with attention, devotion, and reverence.

4) Do not fail to offer up each decade in honor of one of the mysteries, and try to form a picture in your mind of Jesus and Mary in connection with that mystery.

  1. Since the Rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ as seen through the eyes of Mary (whose perspective on these events is much more personal than ours), it helps to imagine yourself standing behind her, just off to the side, as she watches these events unfold. You speak the prayers into her ear, while you watch the events of Christ's life together.

It's much easier not to get distracted if you put yourself right there, watching the events of Christ's life, seeing it from Mary's perspective, watching it along with her, and conversing with her as His life proceeds from event to event.

  2. I like to think of myself as a third party observer in the scene with Jesus and/or Mary, or even holding Mary's hand while she points certain things out to me, and allows me to share and understand what is going on. Maybe we have a conversation too, but sometimes that leads to distraction (I talk too much).

It is too hard and distracting to think of the devil being there. I don't think I could concentrate with this image. We shouldn't think of ourselves being punished because we are distracted, or even tired, or even have a day where we do not want to say the rosary, and consequently our prayers are not said as fully as they should. As long as we make the effort, I believe that it can be pleasing, as long as we acknowledge the inadequacy of what we sometimes produce. Sometimes the crown of roses looks elegant and full, and sometimes, it's a little limp, with discolored, mismatched roses. But I do believe that Mary would say thank you anyway.
